The Sudarium (Veronica's Veil)

Northern Italy, 1325-75
Limestone with traces of paint
Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1981.9a-c

The sudarium is the veil with which St. Veronica is said to have wiped Jesus' face on the way to Calvary and which then retained an image of his face. In this sculpture, angels present the veil to the viewer. In this type of image it is unusual for the face to be superimposed over a cross.
